If you're researching custom apparel printing methods, you've almost certainly come across both DTF (Direct-to-Film) and DTG (Direct-to-Garment). They sound similar, they both produce full-color prints, and they're often compared side by side. But they work very differently — and the right choice depends entirely on what kind of work you're doing.

This guide breaks down DTF vs DTG across every dimension that matters for a real printing business: cost, quality, substrate compatibility, speed, and long-term scalability.


How Each Method Works

DTF (Direct-to-Film) prints your design onto a PET film using special water-based inks, applies a hot-melt adhesive powder, cures the powder with heat, and then transfers the finished print to a garment using a heat press. The transfer can be applied immediately or stored for later use.

DTG (Direct-to-Garment) prints directly onto the fabric surface using modified inkjet technology, similar to printing on paper. For dark garments, a white ink pretreatment is applied first and cured before printing.

Key difference: DTF creates a transferable film that can be pressed onto any substrate. DTG prints directly onto the garment and only works well on fabric — primarily cotton.


Substrate Compatibility

This is where DTF has a clear and significant advantage.

DTF works on: cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, leather, denim, canvas, and more. Light or dark — no pretreatment required. You can press onto a finished product, a bag, a hat, a shoe — almost any flat surface that can handle heat.

DTG works best on: 100% cotton or high-cotton blends. Performance fabrics, polyester, and synthetic materials cause dye migration issues and poor ink adhesion. Dark garments require pretreatment, which adds time and cost per piece.

Winner: DTF. If your customers want printing on polyester jerseys, nylon jackets, or non-apparel items, DTG simply can't do it reliably. DTF can.


Print Quality

Both methods produce excellent full-color results, but they have different strengths.

DTG excels at photographic detail and soft hand feel — because the ink bonds directly with the fabric fibers, it feels like part of the garment. On a premium white cotton tee, a well-executed DTG print is hard to beat for softness and visual detail.

DTF produces slightly raised prints with a smooth, almost glossy surface feel. Colors tend to be more vibrant and consistent, especially on dark garments — because the white adhesive layer underneath acts as a base. Edge definition is sharp and reliable.

It depends: For soft, breathable prints on premium cotton, DTG wins on feel. For vibrant, consistent color across substrate types, DTF wins on versatility.


Cost Per Print

This is where the comparison gets practical for business owners.

DTG cost drivers: Ink is expensive. Pretreatment adds cost and time on dark garments. Print heads clog frequently if not maintained, leading to downtime. Garments must be printed one at a time.

DTF cost drivers: Film and powder are the main consumables. Ink cost is lower than DTG. You can gang multiple designs on a single sheet, reducing waste. Transfers can be pre-printed in batches and pressed on demand.

Winner: DTF for volume. Once you factor in pretreatment, ink costs, and maintenance, DTF typically comes out ahead on cost per print — especially for dark garments and mixed-substrate orders.


Production Speed

DTG prints directly but slowly — a single full-front print on a dark garment (including pretreatment and curing) can take 3–5 minutes per piece. Batch production is limited by how fast each garment moves through the printer.

DTF separates printing from pressing. You can print a full gang sheet of transfers in advance, then press them onto garments at 15–20 seconds per piece. This means your throughput is much higher when you have volume.

Winner: DTF for production volume. Pre-printing transfers lets you separate the bottlenecks. One person prints while another presses — DTG can't easily be split this way.


Equipment Cost and Maintenance

Entry-level DTG printers start at $15,000–$20,000 for reputable brands like Epson, Brother, or Kornit. Maintenance is intensive — regular head cleanings, pretreatment management, and white ink agitation are daily requirements.

Entry-level DTF setups start at $3,000–$6,000. Maintenance is simpler and less frequent, though print heads still require care. The lower entry cost makes DTF far more accessible for new operators.

Winner: DTF. The equipment cost difference is significant. For operators just starting out, DTF allows you to enter the market and generate revenue without a $20,000 equipment commitment.


Wash Durability

Both methods produce wash-durable prints when applied correctly. DTG prints that are properly cured on 100% cotton can last the life of the garment. DTF transfers, when pressed at correct temperature and pressure, also hold up extremely well through repeated washing.

The caveat for both: incorrect application ruins durability. Under-cured DTG prints crack and fade. Improperly pressed DTF transfers peel at the edges. Technique matters more than the method itself.


Which Should You Choose?

Choose DTF if:

  • You need to print on polyester, blends, or non-apparel substrates
  • You're starting out and need a lower equipment investment
  • You want to pre-print and batch press for higher throughput
  • Your customers order dark garments frequently

Choose DTG if:

  • You specialize in premium white or light cotton apparel
  • Soft hand feel is a priority for your customers
  • You're doing one-off, on-demand printing for individual buyers
  • You have the budget and volume to justify the equipment cost

For most small operators in the US market in 2026, DTF is the smarter starting point. Lower cost, higher versatility, and faster production make it the more practical choice — especially if you're serving a range of customers with different substrate needs.
